Mouth Guard / Sports Guards
A mouthguard is a removable rubber appliance, to protect the teeth from traumatic injury during sporting activities. Teeth are at risk of damage when playing impact/contact sport and can result in long and potentially expensive treatment to restore teeth to normal function and appearance if damaged. Mouthguards also help to reduce the risk of jaw fractures and concussion caused by a collision. Mouthguards should be worn during any sport where there is the chance of a knock to the face.

There are three types of sport when we consider the chance of injury:
1. Contact sports where contact is part of the game. These include football, rugby, martial arts and boxing. The mouthguard should be compulsory for training and games.
2. Collision sports where contact often happens but it is not expected or allowed. These include basketball, hockey, water polo, lacrosse, netball, baseball, softball, squash, soccer, BMX bike riding, skateboarding, in-line skating, trampolining, cricket water skiing and snow ski racing. A mouthguard is highly recommended.
3. Non-contact sports where contact is a rare occurrence. These include such sports as tennis where a mouthguard is not needed.
At Alice St Dental we are proud to support all of our local sports teams and hope to keep their teeth safe with custom made mouthguards which can now be made in your team colours. Contact us today to see what deal we can do for your sports team, group discounts apply!
Children’s Dental Care
A childs visit to the dentist does not need to end in tears, here at Alice St Dental we encourage children to be comfortable in the dental environment. Encouraging good oral hygiene and dental awareness at a young age will dramatically reduce your child’s risk of developing dental disease later in life. Monitoring the dental development of children also makes it easier to diagnose and treat orthodontic conditions more simply than if they are not identified until adulthood.
Dental Hygiene/Prevention
We truly believe prevention is better than a cure and so we focus on educating all of our patients in the best techniques of preventing dental disease through Oral Hygiene. Remember we generally only see you for a check-up once or twice a year, so it is what you do at home which is most important. A diet that is high in sugars and/or acid and poor dental hygiene will result in decayed teeth and gum problems. Good hygiene and home care is the first most important step.
Digital Xray Imaging
Dentistry has advanced over the last decade, with our digital xray system we now take all digital xray images. This means images are instanly processed, are more accurate and require the use of minimal radiation.
An OPG is used for full mouth xray of the upper and lower jaw; this is an invaluable tool in our practice, allowing views of any pathology that would not have been picked up on IOPA (small xray). Often used to find out placement of wisodm teeth or un-erupted permanent teeth in childern.
Lateral Cephlogram is a profile xray of the skull and soft tissues; this is used to evaluate the dentofacial proportions. Often used to recognise orthodontic conditions that can be corrected.
3D Image (CBCT cone beam computed tomography) shows views in three dimentions of bone density levels and positioning of un-erupted teeth and is often used for implant placement.
